My Top Movement Tools for Getting Out of Survival Mode

Updated: 7 days ago

Did you know your body has natural stress cycles? One of the healthiest ways to complete those cycles is through movement.

When you experience stress, your body releases hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline to help you respond to danger. Walking, stretching, rebounding, or even gently shaking your arms and legs can help your body process those stress hormones and send clear sensory signals to your brain that the immediate threat has passed.

Movement helps shift you from a dysregulated, reactive state into a calmer, more regulated state. Without opportunities to move, stress hormones can linger in the body, contributing to muscle tension, fatigue, and a prolonged sense of being on high alert.

God designed our bodies to move in order to maintain health and balance. That's why taking short movement breaks throughout the day—between tasks or during periods of prolonged sitting—can make such a significant difference in both physical and emotional well-being.

Rhythmic, repetitive, and gentle movements help activate the parasympathetic nervous system, the body's natural "rest and digest" response. This tells your brain that you are safe, allowing you to move out of survival mode and begin experiencing greater peace and regulation.

This is especially important if you've been chronically living in survival mode—stuck in patterns of fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. Consistent movement helps retrain the brain by reducing the reactivity of the amygdala, the brain's alarm system, while strengthening the prefrontal cortex, which supports rational thinking, emotional regulation, and wise decision-making. Over time, this can decrease anxiety, lessen trauma-related symptoms, and build greater resilience.

One powerful result of this healing process is an increased capacity to walk confidently in your unique calling and faithfully carry out the assignments God has entrusted to you.

Below, I'm sharing a few of my favorite movement tools for caring for the body temple and supporting nervous system regulation.

The rhythmic vibrations may lower cortisol levels, improve circulation, and promote muscle relaxation, signaling safety to the brain. With consistency, this can help the body exit survival mode, encouraging a shift from the sympathetic “fight-or-flight” state into the parasympathetic “rest-and-digest” mode.

The low-impact, rhythmic movement engages multiple physiological systems, especially calming the nervous system. The constant up-and-down motion creates a gentle, pulsating rhythm that the nervous system can process as calming, helping to shift the body from a heightened flight/fight/freeze/fawn state into a more balanced, rest-and-digest state.
